TWO MELODIES FOR STRING ORCHESTRA, Op. 53, composed in 1890 by Edvard Grieg (1843-1907), is based on two Norwegian poems, Fyremål by Aasmund Vinje and Det første mødes sødme (The First Meeting) by Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson. The first setting, named Norsk (Norwegian), expresses national pride in its exhortation to stay on the path until the end of the journey. Grieg also arranged the second song for voice and orchestra and included it in his PIANO TRANSCRIPTIONS OF SONGS, Op. 52. Instrumentation: String Orchestra (8.8.5.5.5 in set).
