Based on a tune written in 1945 by Private Chester F. Kowalec of the 33rd Armored Regiment, Charles Booker used the melody in his 1980 arrangement “Our Third Armored Division Song.” Booker later composed new material to serve as the opening of the march, placing his 1980 setting in the position of honor as the march’s trio, and called it GUNS UP! It showcases lyrical melodies in a setting combining accented rhythms, rich harmonies, strong counter melodies and a short, but inventive fanfare.
