Lamento, composed in 1961 for tuba and piano, is a brief but evocative elegy in 5/4 meter. The composer, having served in the Air Force during World War II, went on to study composition with Roy Harris, Howard Hanson, Ernst Krenek and William Schuman. Prolific in vocal and instrumental works, he received a number of commissions and coined the term “harmatonality” to describe his integration of both tonal and atonal musical form.
