Description: Composed in the spring of 1999, this work was written at the request of Chris Moore, Professor of Trumpet at The University of Kansas. It was premiered by the University of Kansas Trumpet Ensemble at the June 1999 meeting of the International Trumpet Guild in Roanoke, Virginia. The work is scored for four Bb trumpets, four Bb cornets and 4 Bb Flugelhorns. Although it can be performed with 12 Bb Trumpets (or 12 C’s, for that matter), every effort should be made to use the comets and flugelhorns with the trumpets. Using all three instrumental colors renders the Toccatas desired effect, both in the vertically complex harmonic sections and in the more linear contrapuntal episodes. The contrast in colors between the trumpets, cornets and flugelhorns make the ensemble sound completely different than if only trumpets are used.
