Concerto for Piano and Orchestra (Oceans Apart) was commissioned by the Boston Symphony Orchestra for Garrick Ohlsson, Andris Nelsons, Music Director, with support from the New Works Fund of the Massachusetts Cultural Council, a state agency, and by the Orchestre philharmonique de Radio France, Myun-Whun Chung, Music Director. The work by composer Justin Dello Joio represents the oceanic vastness of the polarization of our time, with people moving irreparably apart, more broadly, but also musically as concert music is separated so much from American society today. The BSO gave the first performance on January 12, 2023, under the direction of Alan Gilbert, with Garrick Ohlsson as soloist.
